Global shark population have declined by as much as 90 per cent since the 1970s and 30 per cent of shark species that remain are now classified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as threatened or near-threatened with extinction.
Around 73 million are killed each year, primarily for the Asian shark fin trade.
